Union Declares Official Work to the Rule Action

Members at all Broward schools worksites are urged to participate in “Work to the Rule” activities Monday, November 9 to Wednesday, November 25. “Work to the Rule” will end before the Thanksgiving Holiday. All members are asked to “Work to the Rule” to show support for the ongoing contract negotiations and demonstrate the value of their contributions to the workplace.

“Work to the Rule” can be highly effective when the entire worksite supports it -- widespread member participation is essential.

The basic guide for engaging in “Work to the Rule” is quite simple: Members should not volunteer for any non-paid activities, including after school functions and non-compensated committee meetings. Coaches and activity sponsors who are paid should continue to work but unpaid volunteers should not.

Members should NOT participate in before and after non-compensated school activities including grading papers, parent conferences, school social events, sporting events, holiday concerts or other related events.

Teachers who receive contractually agreed upon supplements for extra duties should continue to perform those functions but to the “letter” of the job description -- nothing more.

If teachers and other school employees receive concerns from parents or community supporters, members can use the opportunity to speak to them about eliminating district waste instead of laying off teachers and freezing employees’ wages.

Members are encouraged to support the ongoing contract negotiations. Participate in “Work to the Rule” activities during this short period of time: Monday, November 9 to Wednesday, November 25.
